A friendly recycling app concept using AI scanning, daily/weekly challenges, and feedback to build better habits - wrapped in a warm, mascot-led UI.
Pete is a mobile recycling guide designed to make plastic sorting easy and rewarding. The concept combines AI-based item scanning with daily and weekly challenges, gentle nudges, and immediate feedback. The main dashboard surfaces the essentials in one glance:
- active challenges
- a nearby drop-off map
- recent scans
- and a lightweight friends scoreboard.
Contextual overlays (Daily Tip, Daily Challenge, Recent Scans) keep the flow focused, while a recovery path lets users correct misclassified scans. A custom design system with robust component variants ensures consistency and scale, and the mascot “Pete” brings warmth through small moments and micro-interactions.
The prototype was built “quick-and-iterative” in Figma to enable fast learning and future testing.
Goals / Problem:
Lower the barrier to plastic sorting and help users form lasting habits via play, guidance, and feedback.
Solution & Key features:
- AI Scan with manual correction
- Dashboard overlays: Daily Tip, Daily Challenge, Recent Scans
- Recovery flow for fixing flagged/uncertain scans
- Challenges & lightweight friends scoreboard
- Nearby recycling points map (horizontal browse)
- Custom design system & component variants
Process (in brief):
Sketches → benchmark → adapt & extend design-system patterns → component/variant build in Figma → prototyping & micro-interactions → rapid iterations.
Deliverables
Clickable Figma prototype (mobile), UI library & components, key screens (Onboarding, Dashboard + overlays, Scan, Challenges, Profile, Map).
